Long prized in the Orient, traditionally harvested wild in China during the Ming Dynasty, however the Japanese worked out how to cultivate shiitake on logs. The suffix -’take’ means ‘fruit of the mushroom’ in Japanese and the prefix ‘shii’- refers to the type of tree the mushie grows on, in this case a Japanese tree similar to birch. Shiitake replenishes Qi, nourishes blood and it is very supportive of the immune system.
It’s also an amazing anti-ageing mushroom, assisting in preserving the vitality of the skin. It is also an overall restorative, useful in times of healing and convalescence. Like many of the medicinal mushrooms, shiitake has a sweet and neutral flavour and action, and supports the Lung, Spleen and Stomach meridians and the Wei Qi (which loosely correlates to our surface immunity).
It is loved in TCM for its capacity to replenish Qi and nourishes Blood, as well as for dissolving Damp and Stagnation (it’s great for helping clear up phlegm).
